For unlocking a research, you generally have to perform a challenge, maybe as a particular faction, maybe as any faction. For example, S105 (Increases mana regen based on your RP totals) requires that you have a total of 600 RP among all 6 research trees. This one would technically be easier in later Rs, but isn't that difficult in general.
